How much is the grant

The amount depends on the deceased's status. The table shows both 2026 figures:

How the amount is set

The funeral grant is fixed each year in the state social insurance budget law. By law it cannot fall below the average gross monthly salary used to build that budget.

For 2026, the average gross salary used in the budget calculation is 9,192 RON — which is why the grant for an insured person's death equals that same figure.

When the deceased was an insured worker or pensioner

If the deceased had an employment contract, was drawing a pension, or was receiving unemployment benefit, the grant is the full amount — 9,192 RON in 2026.

The grant is paid once, to whoever bore the funeral costs. See also the funeral grant hub.

When the deceased was an uninsured family member

If the deceased was an uninsured family member of an insured person or pensioner — a stay-at-home spouse, a dependent child — the grant is half: 4,596 RON in 2026.

For situations where the deceased had no connection to the social insurance system at all, there are other routes explained in the guide on funeral aid for uninsured persons.

Who can receive the grant

The grant goes to whoever bore the funeral costs — a family member, a relative, or any other person or legal entity that can prove they paid. The degree of kinship does not matter; what matters is proof of payment.

Only one claim is accepted per death, filed with a single application at the pension house that handled the deceased's file.

When the grant is paid

Payment is made within 3 business days of filing — by cash at the pension house cashier or by bank transfer, whichever you choose on the application form.

The right to claim the grant is subject to the general limitation period of 3 years from the date on the death certificate.
