Durable funeral monuments

The funeral monument is the final element of organizing a burial — a permanent tribute to the departed. We work with granite (most durable option), marble (classic, elegant), basalt (intense black), and travertine (rustic). We offer simple monuments (cross + pedestal, from 1,500 RON), complete monuments with grave covering and borders (3,500-8,000 RON), and premium crypts (up to 25,000 RON). All include inscribed name, dates, and short epitaph. Monument installation coordinates with the [cemetery concession](/locuri-de-veci/).

Materials used

  • Granite — most durable, resistant to frost and sun, wide color range (red, gray, black, green, white). Standard for premium monuments.
  • Marble — classic, elegant, white-cream colors, less frost-resistant than granite
  • Basalt — intense black, very durable, sober appearance
  • Travertine — rustic, beige-cream, textured finish
  • Mosaic — accessible option, manual work with small stones
  • Wood — temporary cross until permanent monument installation

Monument types

  • Simple cross (granite or marble) — 1,500-3,500 RON, just cross with small pedestal
  • Simple monument (cross + pedestal + inscribed plate) — 2,500-5,000 RON
  • Complete monument (cross + pedestal + grave covering + borders) — 3,500-8,000 RON
  • Double monument (for two persons, spouses for example) — 5,000-12,000 RON
  • Crypt (underground, for multiple persons) — 15,000-25,000 RON
  • Monument without cross (geometric shape or horizontal plate) — 2,000-5,000 RON, for secular ceremonies or non-Christian confessions

Inscription and personalization

  • Deceased's full name — standard or calligraphic characters
  • Dates (birth and death) — full or short format
  • Short epitaph — religious quote or commemorative phrase (max 20-30 words)
  • Photo-ceramic — deceased's photo transferred to weather-resistant ceramic (300-800 RON)
  • Photo-engraving — photo engraved directly into monument stone (500-1,500 RON, for granite and marble)
  • Photo-sandblasting — modern technique with pressurized sand, long-term resistant
  • Additional religious symbols — Orthodox cross, Catholic cross, Jewish symbols, etc.
  • Words or dedications on the side — „To the beloved father”, „To dear mother”, etc.

Manufacturing and installation duration

Manufacturing time varies by complexity. Simple standard granite cross: 2-3 weeks. Complete monument with covering and borders: 4-6 weeks. Crypt: 2-4 months. For urgent cases (installation at 40 days from death), we prioritize.

Cemetery installation requires cemetery administration approval (generally 1-2 business days) and is done by our specialized team. Actual duration 4-8 hours for standard monument, 1-2 days for crypt.

Standard dimensions and what fits the plot

Cemetery plots in Romania are typically conceded in two sizes. Knowing the footprint before you order prevents costly remakes:

  • Single plot (~2 m2) — accommodates a single granite cross (80-120 cm tall) or a simple monument with a 100 x 50 cm base footprint. A covering slab and narrow borders can be added within the same area.
  • Double plot (~3-4 m2) — designed for two persons. A double monument with a 200 x 100 cm perimeter fits comfortably, with room for a flower vase and borders.
  • Columbarium niche — much smaller space. A plaque of 30 x 30 cm or 40 x 30 cm is standard; some columbaria allow up to 40 x 50 cm. Confirm the exact niche dimensions with the crematorium or cemetery administration before ordering.
  • Crypt — dimensions vary by number of spaces and cemetery regulations. Full interior and exterior cladding in granite or marble is standard. We visit the site before drawing up specifications.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

What families ask about funeral monuments and grave landscaping

  • When is the monument installed after the burial?

Traditionally, the monument is installed after 40 days from burial (alongside the 40-day memorial). This period allows natural soil settling. For urgent cases, the monument can be installed earlier, but there's risk of unevenness. For late cases (after 6 months, 1 year), additional ground preparation is done. For the 40-day memorial meal, see our parastas and memorial services page.

  • How long does a granite monument last?

Granite is very durable — 50-100+ years without major aesthetic issues. Only possible issues: inscription yellowing (after 30-50 years) and minor photo-engraving erosion. For photo-ceramic, durability is 20-40 years — after that, replacement may be needed.

  • Can I choose granite color?

Yes. Most common ranges: gray (most accessible), red (popular in Romania), black (Basalt or Indian black granite), green, white-cream. Price differences can be significant — Romanian Carpathian red granite is accessible, Indian black granite is more expensive (+30-50%).

  • Can I modify an existing monument?

Yes, in many cases. Adding a new name (for spouses, when the second dies), inscribing a new date, adding photo-ceramic, redoing faded inscriptions — all possible. We visit you at the cemetery for evaluation, with indicative cost after. For the full cost context, see our guide to funeral costs.

  • How is a funeral monument maintained?

Annual cleaning with water and soap (or stone-specific solutions — no strong acids), removing moss and algae in spring, replacing dried flowers, redoing faded inscriptions after 20-30 years. We can offer annual maintenance service (200-500 RON/year).

  • Can I have a monument without cross, more secular?

Yes. For civil ceremonies, non-religious families, or non-Christian confessions, we offer crossless monuments — geometric shape (cube, pillar, prism), horizontal plate (more discreet), or monument with other religious symbol (Jewish cross, Islamic crescent, Buddhist symbol, etc.).

  • What size monument fits a standard single plot?

A standard single cemetery plot in Romania is typically about 2 m2 (roughly 100 x 200 cm surface area). A granite cross of 80-120 cm height with a base of 40-50 cm fits comfortably, as does a simple monument with a 100 x 50 cm base footprint plus surrounding borders. Before ordering, confirm the exact concession dimensions with the cemetery administration — plots can vary, especially older ones.
