Burial plots — cemetery concessions

The burial plot is the cemetery land concessioned for the deceased's burial. In Bucharest, a new plot concession costs 15,000-30,000 RON, depending on cemetery and zone. In other large cities (Cluj, Iași, Timișoara), 10,000-20,000 RON. In small cities and villages, 3,000-8,000 RON. Concession is 7-25 years, renewable. We help you find and concession a plot, or check if one exists in the family.

Burial plot types

  • Individual plot — for one person, ~1.5 m² (2x1m)
  • Double plot — for two persons (spouses), ~3 m² (2x1.5m)
  • Family plot — for 3-4 persons, ~6 m²
  • Crypt — underground construction for multiple persons, ~10-20 m² surface
  • Urn plot (columbarium or urn burial) — much smaller dimensions
  • Temporary plot — short concession (7 years) for specific cases

2026 concession costs

Costs vary significantly by cemetery, zone, and availability.

  • Bucharest — central cemeteries (Reînvierea, Bellu, Sfânta Vineri): 20,000-30,000 RON
  • Bucharest — intermediate cemeteries (Tudor Vladimirescu, Eternitatea): 15,000-25,000 RON
  • Bucharest — peripheral cemeteries (Domnești, Pantelimon, Berceni): 10,000-15,000 RON
  • Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Timișoara, Constanța: 10,000-20,000 RON
  • Medium cities (Brașov, Sibiu, Bacău): 7,000-15,000 RON
  • Small cities and villages: 3,000-8,000 RON
  • Crypt in Bucharest: 30,000-60,000 RON (construction included)

Concession duration and renewal

Concessions are granted for 7-25 years, depending on cemetery and local regulation. In Bucharest, standard concessions are 7 years (renewable) or 25 years (Bellu, Reînvierea). At smaller cemeteries, durations of 10-15 years.

Renewal is done at concession expiry, with a fee similar to the initial one (sometimes lower, depending on cemetery). If the family doesn't renew, the plot is re-concessioned after 1-2 years of warning.

Checking an existing family plot

If a close relative is already buried in a cemetery, there's probably a concessioned plot in the family's name. Verification: with a copy of the concession document (if available) or the previous deceased's ID, visit the cemetery administration.

An existing plot can be used for a new burial after 7 years from the last (sanitary settling rule). For urns (cremation), the term is shorter — 1-3 years. The family pays only opening and closing fees (200-500 RON), not a new concession.

Burial plot maintenance

  • Monthly or occasional cleaning (flowers, leaves, snow)
  • Monument check — cracks, damage (spring and autumn)
  • Flower replacement at holidays (Easter, November 1, deceased's day)
  • Annual cemetery administration fee — 50-200 RON/year (water, security)
  • Monument restoration after 20-30 years — 1,500-5,000 RON
  • We can offer annual maintenance service for families who can't visit regularly

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Answers to frequent questions

  • How much does a new burial plot cost in Bucharest?

Between 15,000 and 30,000 RON, depending on cemetery and zone. Central cemeteries (Bellu, Reînvierea) are most expensive. Peripheral cemeteries (Domnești, Pantelimon) are more accessible (10,000-15,000 RON). Standard concession is 7 years (renewable) or 25 years.

  • Can I use an existing family plot?

Yes. After 7 years from the last burial (sanitary settling rule), a new burial can be done in the same plot. For urns (cremation), the term is 1-3 years. You pay only opening and closing fees (200-500 RON), not a new concession.

  • What happens if I don't renew the concession at expiry?

The cemetery sends a notice 6 months before expiry. If the family doesn't pay renewal in maximum 1-2 years after warning, the plot is considered abandoned and re-concessioned. Remains stay but may be moved to a common ossuary by administration.

  • Can I have a burial plot in a different city than where I live?

Yes. Many families prefer burial in a traditional family cemetery (in village of origin, for example). Inter-county transport costs are included in the funeral package. The burial plot is independent of family residence.

  • How much does a crypt cost?

30,000-60,000 RON (in Bucharest) for complete construction. The crypt is an underground construction allowing multiple burials (4-8 persons, depending on size). Costs include excavation, masonry, exterior monument. Duration: 2-4 months of construction.

  • What annual fees are there for a burial plot?

50-200 RON/year for cemetery administration (water for flowers, security, path maintenance). This doesn't renew the concession — it's a separate maintenance fee. At some cemeteries (private), fees may be higher (300-500 RON/year).
