FUNERAL GRANT · THE PENSION HOUSE

Romanian funeral grant at the pension house: where and how

The funeral grant application is filed at the territorial pension house (casa teritorială de pensii) that covered the deceased — determined by their registered address, not yours. That is where you hand in the documents, insured status is verified, and the payment is made. In 2026 the grant is 9,192 RON for an insured worker or pensioner. Payment comes within 3 business days, by cash or bank transfer. This guide explains which pension house to go to, what to bring, and how the process works.

Which pension house to go to

File at the territorial pension house that covered the deceased, based on their registered address — not your own address, and not where the death occurred. Every county has one; Bucharest has its own municipal house.

If the deceased was registered in a different county from where the death happened, the right house is still the one for their registered address.

What to bring

Bring the complete file in original and copy so you can do it in one trip:

  • Standard application form for the funeral grant
  • Death certificate
  • Your own ID
  • Documents proving your relationship to the deceased or your status as claimant
  • Proof of funeral costs — invoice and receipt — or a signed declaration
  • For employed deceased persons: employer certificate confirming insured status at the date of death

How the submission works

At the counter, the officer checks your documents and verifies the deceased's insured status. If the file is complete, the application is registered on the spot.

Payment follows within 3 business days. A well-prepared file means one trip.

How you receive the payment

The 9,192 RON grant is paid by cash at the pension house cashier, or by transfer to a bank account — whichever you choose on the application. Payment is made within 3 business days.

For the death of an uninsured family member of an insured person, the amount is half — 4,596 RON in 2026.

If the deceased was not insured

The pension house handles grants for insured workers and pensioners only. If the deceased was never part of the social insurance system, the grant comes from the local town hall (primărie), not the pension house.

Those situations are explained in the guide on funeral aid for uninsured persons.

How long you have to file

You do not have to go during the burial days. The right to claim runs for 3 years from the date on the death certificate.

Many families file early because the payment helps cover immediate costs.

The link to CNPP

The territorial pension house is the local office of CNPP — Casa Națională de Pensii Publice. Rules are set nationally; filing and payment are local. That is why the amount is the same whichever pension house you use.

  • What do I bring to the pension house?

Standard application form, death certificate, your ID, proof of relationship, proof of funeral costs and, for employed deceased persons, the employer certificate confirming insured status.

  • How long does payment take?

Within 3 business days of filing, by cash at the cashier or by bank transfer.

  • How much will I receive at the pension house?

9,192 RON for the death of an insured worker or pensioner; 4,596 RON for the death of an uninsured family member of an insured person.

  • What if the deceased was registered in a different county?

File at the pension house for the deceased's registered address, even if the death occurred elsewhere. That is the competent office.

  • Do I have to go during the burial days?

No. The right to claim runs for 3 years from the date on the death certificate. Many families file early because the payment helps cover immediate costs.

  • Can I receive the payment by bank transfer?

Yes. You choose on the application: cash at the cashier or transfer to a bank account.

  • What if my file is incomplete?

An incomplete file cannot be registered. Bring all the required documents — originals and copies — so you can do it in one trip.

  • Does the pension house grant aid for uninsured persons?

No. For people who were never insured, the grant comes from the local town hall, not the pension house.

  • Who can file the application?

Anyone who bore the funeral costs and can prove it — family member or not. The grant is paid once per death.

  • Is the territorial pension house part of CNPP?

Yes. It is CNPP's local office. Rules are national — the amount is the same everywhere — but filing and payment are done locally.

  • Can I send someone else with the file?

Yes. A person who bore the costs or an authorised representative can file. We can prepare and submit the file on your behalf.

  • Does the pension house grant aid for cremation?

Yes. The funeral grant applies regardless of whether you choose burial or cremation, on the same documents and proof of costs.

  • Can I file after the funeral?

Yes. You do not have to file during the burial days. The right runs for 3 years from the date on the death certificate.

  • Does the pension house verify the deceased's insured status?

Yes. The officer checks insured status using the deceased's national ID number (CNP). That determines entitlement and the applicable amount.

  • Does the pension house require originals?

Yes, for key documents — the death certificate and your ID are presented in original and copy. The originals are checked at the counter and returned; copies stay on file.

  • Is the pension house open on Saturdays?

Generally no — public hours are on working days. Check the specific house's schedule before you go.
