MEMORIAL SERVICES · ROMANIAN TRADITION

Memorial services — Orthodox tradition of remembrance

The memorial service (or wake meal) is the Orthodox tradition of remembering the departed at specific moments after death: 40 days, 6 months, 1 year, 3 years, 7 years. It involves a memorial service at church (followed or not by a memorial meal at home or restaurant), with a traditional food package (koliva, breads, wine, cooked food). We help with organization — food packages, church coordination, delivery.

Traditional remembrance moments

  • At 3 days — first remembrance moment, still in acute mourning
  • At 9 days — short remembrance, marks end of first 9 days
  • At 40 days — most important moment after burial. Complete church service, wake meal with extended guests.
  • At 6 months — intermediate, more restricted remembrance
  • At 1 year — major moment. Special service, possibly monument raising (if not already done).
  • At 3 years — traditional Orthodox remembrance, marks „soul ending” per popular tradition
  • At 7 years — major remembrance, after which memorials become less frequent
  • Annually on death anniversary — personal family remembrance

What a traditional food package contains

  • Koliva — boiled wheat with crushed walnuts, honey, cinnamon (500g-3kg depending on guests)
  • Breads — special round bread, to be shared
  • Wine — for memorial toast
  • Candles for each guest (may be symbolic)
  • Flat water or spring water (per tradition)
  • Cooked food — sarmale, roast, salads (depending on package)
  • Sweets — cozonac, traditional pastries

How we coordinate the memorial

Family notifies us 7-14 days before the planned date. We set: guest count, location (home, cemetery chapel, restaurant), chosen package, time.

We coordinate with the church for the memorial service (priest's fee 100-300 RON paid directly to church). We deliver the food package to the agreed location 1-2 hours in advance. We set up the meal, prepare koliva and breads. We provide assistance throughout the meal.

For cemetery memorials (after service), we bring the package directly there — short meal, just koliva and breads distributed to guests.

Memorial traditions — meanings

Koliva — symbolizes resurrection (the wheat that dies in the ground and rises). A candle is lit in the middle, rotated above the head in 4 cardinal points (prayer for the 4 directions).

Breads — the bread that unites generations. It's broken and shared with all guests.

Wine — symbolizes Christ's blood. Toast „God forgive him/her” and take a small sip.

Candles — each guest lights a candle for the departed's soul.

Food — meal solemnity is integral to remembrance — not just a meal, but a ritual of forgiveness and remembrance.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Answers to frequent questions

  • When is the 40-day memorial service done after death?

Exactly 40 days from death date (calendar). Usually planned on weekend to allow relative attendance. Service at church Saturday or Sunday, meal at family after service.

  • How much does a 40-day memorial cost?

Our complete 40-day package (12-16 people) costs 1,200-2,000 RON. Includes koliva, breads, wine, sarmale, salads, sweets, delivery, and assistance. For larger numbers (24+ people), package 2,500-4,000 RON.

  • Must a priest be present at the memorial meal?

Traditionally, the memorial service is done at church (with priest) BEFORE the memorial meal. At the meal, the priest may or may not be present — depends on family. For smaller memorials, only the church service suffices. For elaborate memorials, the priest also comes to the meal for a short prayer.

  • Can I organize the memorial meal at home or must it be at a restaurant?

Both options are acceptable. Traditionally, the memorial meal is held at home, with family. In recent years, many families choose restaurant or cemetery chapel — easier logistically. We deliver and assist regardless of location.

  • How many kolivas should there be?

A single large koliva (1-3 kg) is sufficient for all guests. Placed on the table in the middle, with a lit candle. After the service or short prayer, the koliva is distributed to all guests in small bowls (1-2 spoons each).

  • Do memorial meals also include items (clothes, dishes) given to the poor?

Yes, a very old tradition. At 40 days and 1 year, the family distributes individual „pomeni” — packages with food + a symbolic item (spoon, cup, towel) — to close relatives or the poor at church. We don't supply these items, but can coordinate if the family tells us what to offer.
