FUNERAL ACCESSORIES

Funeral accessories for the wake and ceremony

Funeral accessories are the items needed for the wake and ceremony — candles, a cross, vigil lamps, an icon, cloth, koliva, and ceremonial bread. We include them in our [funeral packages](/pachete-funerare/) or you can take them separately. We make sure nothing is missing in the hard days, so you don't have to chase details.

What funeral accessories are

Funeral accessories are the small but necessary items that accompany the wake, the service, and the burial. Some belong to tradition (candles, koliva, ceremonial bread), others to the practical side (temporary cross, cloth, veil).

You don't have to source them yourself. We prepare them, either as part of a complete package or separately, depending on what you need.

The funeral kit — what it contains

The Orthodox funeral kit is a fixed set of items assembled so the family does not have to source them individually during the hardest 24-48 hours. Each item has a specific role in the ceremony:

  • Wax candles — given to attendees at the service; the family holds them lit during the reading of the prayers.
  • Vigil lamp and oil — kept burning near the casket from the moment of death until burial; a continuous light for the departed soul.
  • Incense and charcoal — burned by the priest at the beginning of the service and at the grave; the smoke is believed to carry prayers upward.
  • Handkerchiefs — distributed to close family and pallbearers; a traditional token of participation in the mourning.
  • Towel (prosop) — used at the washing of the body and at the grave; symbolic purification.
  • Soap — also part of the washing ritual, by Orthodox custom.
  • Mourning veil — worn by close female relatives during the wake and service.

Included in packages or separately

In our funeral packages, the essential accessories are already included, so you don't pay separately for them. If you need only certain accessories — for example a temporary cross or a complete kit — you can take them separately too. We tell you from the first call what's in the package and what's taken separately. For the memorial services after the ceremony, see our parastas page.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

What families ask about funeral accessories

  • What accessories are needed at a funeral?

Usually: vigil candles, a temporary wooden cross, vigil lamps, an icon, cloth and veil, and koliva with ceremonial bread. We prepare them, so you don't chase details in the hard days.

  • Are the accessories included in the package?

Yes, in complete funeral packages the essential accessories are already included. If you want only certain accessories, you can take them separately. We tell you clearly what's in the package.

  • What is a funeral kit?

It is a set that includes all the essential accessories for the wake and ceremony — candles, temporary cross, vigil lamps, icon, cloth, koliva, and ceremonial bread — in a single package.

  • How much do funeral accessories cost?

It depends on what you choose and whether they're part of a package. We present the prices clearly, before any commitment. In complete packages, the essential accessories are already included.

  • Do you prepare the koliva and ceremonial bread?

Yes, we prepare them by tradition, for the wake, service, and remembrance. Tell us how many people are expected and we take care of it.

  • Is the funeral kit the same for non-Orthodox families?

The standard kit follows the Romanian Orthodox custom — incense, wax candles, vigil lamp, handkerchiefs, towel, soap, and veil. For Catholic, Greek-Catholic, or civil ceremonies, some items differ. Tell us the denomination and we adapt the kit: for example, Catholic services use different candle sizes and do not require the same washing ritual items. We adjust at no extra cost. For the ceremony organization itself, see our ceremony service page.
