BURIAL PLOTS · OBTAINING A PLOT

How do you obtain a burial plot in Romania?

A burial plot is obtained through a concession from the cemetery administration — a right of use granted for a set period or, in some cemeteries, for a longer term. The process involves an application, a concession contract, and payment of the concession fee. Costs vary widely depending on the cemetery and location. We handle the paperwork and liaise with the administration so the family does not have to run between offices at the hardest of times.

What is a burial plot concession?

A burial plot is the land within a cemetery that the family receives the right to use for burial and ongoing care of the grave. It is not, as a rule, an ownership — it is a concession, a right of use granted by the cemetery administration.

The concession is granted for a period set by each cemetery's own regulations. At the end of the term it can usually be renewed. This is where the burial takes place and, in time, where the funeral monument is erected.

What are the steps to get a plot?

Obtaining a burial plot follows a few straightforward steps, which we can carry out on the family's behalf under a simple power of attorney:

  • Application to the administrația cimitirului (cemetery administration) of the chosen cemetery
  • Verification of plot availability at that cemetery
  • Signing the concession contract
  • Payment of the concession fee and the annual maintenance fee
  • Receipt of the concession deed — proof of the right to the plot

What documents are required?

The exact documents differ slightly from one cemetery to another, but as a rule they are few. We prepare them together:

  • Identity document of the applicant
  • The cemetery's standard application form
  • Death certificate — when the concession is sought for an immediate burial
  • Proof of fee payment

What types of concession are available?

Cemeteries grant concessions for different durations. The table below shows the common variants; which is available depends on each cemetery's regulations.

TypeWhat it means
Fixed-term concessionRight of use for a set number of years, renewable at the end of the term
Long-term concessionExtended period, where the cemetery's regulations permit it
Free allocationFor specific categories (e.g. war veterans), subject to plot availability
Types of burial plot concession Availability and exact terminology differ from one cemetery to another. Confirm with the administration of your chosen cemetery.

How much does a burial plot cost?

The cost of a new burial plot varies considerably depending on the cemetery, city, and location within the cemetery. As a general guide, a new plot can cost between 3,000 and 30,000 lei.

On top of the concession fee, an annual maintenance fee is payable, and separately, the monument. For an estimate of the total cost of a funeral, see our pricing page.

What if the family already has a plot?

If a family burial plot already exists, no new concession is needed. The burial is scheduled there with the agreement of the administration.

An existing plot can accommodate multiple burials over time, through superposition or after exhumation of remains. Details about this process are on our exhumation and disinterment page.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Answers to frequent questions

  • Does the family own the burial plot?

As a rule, no. It is a concession — a right of use granted by the cemetery administration for a period set by the regulations, which can normally be renewed at the end of the term.

  • How do you obtain a burial plot?

By filing an application with the administration of the chosen cemetery, followed by signing a concession contract and paying the fees. You then receive the concession deed. We handle every step on your behalf under a power of attorney.

  • What documents do I need?

Usually an identity document, the cemetery's standard application form, and — for an immediate burial — the death certificate. The exact list varies slightly from one cemetery to another.

  • How much does a new burial plot cost?

As a general guide, between 3,000 and 30,000 lei, depending on the cemetery, city, and location within the cemetery. The concession fee is supplemented by the annual maintenance fee and, separately, the monument.

  • How long does the concession last?

It depends on each cemetery's regulations — usually for a set number of years, with the possibility of renewal. Some cemeteries offer longer terms. Confirm with the administration of your chosen cemetery.

  • Can I obtain a plot free of charge?

In certain circumstances, yes — for special categories such as war veterans, subject to plot availability. See our page on free burial plots for the eligible categories.

  • What happens at the end of the concession?

The concession can usually be renewed by paying the fee again. If it is not renewed and the plot is left unattended, the administration may reallocate it under the cemetery's regulations. Check the deadlines with the cemetery.

  • Can I obtain a plot before I need it?

Yes, in many cemeteries a concession can be obtained in advance. This is an option for advance planning, sparing the family an additional burden at a difficult time.

  • Can the plot be used for more than one person?

Yes, over time and subject to the cemetery's rules. A family plot can receive multiple burials through superposition or after exhumation of remains, usually after 7 years from the last burial.

  • Will you help us obtain the plot?

Yes. We handle the application, all liaison with the cemetery administration, and the concession deed, on the basis of a power of attorney. We coordinate everything alongside the burial.
