Burial plot maintenance: the annual fee and grave care

Maintaining a burial plot has two distinct parts: the annual fee paid to the cemetery administration, and the physical care of the grave itself. The fee covers the cemetery's shared services — pathways, water supply, security, waste collection — not the cleaning of the individual grave. The latter remains the family's responsibility, or that of a hired team. We explain what each part involves and can assist with care if you live far away.

What is the annual maintenance fee?

Almost all cemeteries charge an annual maintenance fee, separate from the concession fee paid when obtaining the plot. It is paid to the cemetery administration and renewed each year.

The fee covers the cemetery's shared services, not the individual grave. The exact amount varies considerably from one cemetery to another, depending on the city and the services provided.

What does the maintenance fee cover — and what does it not cover?

Many people confuse the maintenance fee with grave care. They are different things. The table below clarifies what is included in the fee and what remains the family's responsibility.

What does grave care involve?

Physical grave care means cleaning the stone, replacing flowers and candles, removing leaves, and carrying out minor repairs. Families do this themselves or hire a team.

For those living far away — in another city or abroad — regular care becomes difficult. In these cases a team can carry out periodic cleaning, especially before public holidays and memorial observances.

What happens if the fee is not paid?

Failure to pay the maintenance fee for several consecutive years, combined with leaving the grave untended, may — under the cemetery's regulations — lead to the plot being declared abandoned.

An abandoned plot can be reallocated by the administration, following a procedure and within a timeframe set by the cemetery's regulations. It is therefore important that the fee is paid on time and the plot kept in order. Check the deadlines with the cemetery administration.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Answers to frequent questions

  • What is the burial plot maintenance fee?

An annual fee paid to the cemetery administration, separate from the concession fee. It covers the cemetery's shared services — pathways, water, security, waste collection — not the individual grave.

  • How much does the annual maintenance cost?

It varies considerably from one cemetery to another, depending on the city and the services offered. The exact amount is set and communicated by each cemetery's administration.

  • Does the fee include cleaning the grave?

No. The fee covers shared areas, not the individual grave. Cleaning the stone, replacing flowers and candles, and carrying out repairs remain the family's responsibility or that of a hired team.

  • What happens if I do not pay the fee?

Non-payment for several years combined with leaving the grave untended may, under the cemetery's regulations, lead to the plot being declared abandoned and reallocated, following a set procedure and within a set timeframe.

  • Can you look after the grave if I am abroad?

Yes. For families living far away, we can carry out periodic cleaning, replace flowers and candles, especially before public holidays and memorial observances. We will tell you in advance what this involves.

  • Who repairs a damaged monument?

Monument repairs are the family's responsibility. We can coordinate them — cleaning, restoration, or work on the stone and kerbing. See also our funeral monuments page.

  • Can I lose the plot if I do not maintain it?

Over time, yes. A plot left untended and with the fee unpaid for several years can be declared abandoned and reallocated under the cemetery's regulations. Paying the fee on time and keeping the plot in order prevents this.
