WHAT DRIVES THE PRICE

The factors that affect the cost

Distance is the first factor. Road repatriation from Italy or France costs less than air transport from Spain or from outside Europe. Air transport is faster but more expensive — and mandatory for long distances.

The cost also includes a hermetically sealed zinc-lined coffin, mandatory for international transport, preparation of the deceased and a mortuary passport. Consular formalities, more complex in some countries, can extend both the timeline and the cost.

Each country has a dedicated page with cost and procedure — for example Italy, Germany or Spain.

WHAT THE COST COVERS

What's included in the repatriation price?

A full repatriation cost usually covers preparation of the deceased, the hermetically sealed zinc-lined coffin, the outer wooden coffin, the documents (local death certificate, mortuary passport, consular authorisation) and the transport itself to Romania.

On arrival, we coordinate collection, certificate transcription and the funeral arrangements. The family handles none of the formalities. For the complete process, see the repatriation guide.

WHO COVERS THE COST

Insurance and payment for repatriation

As a rule, the cost of repatriation is borne by the family. In some cases, a work insurance policy, travel insurance or a repatriation policy from the country where the deceased lived covers part or all of the cost.

We recommend reviewing the deceased's documents before making any payment: the employment contract, insurance policies, and any employer-provided repatriation benefits. Many companies abroad include this type of cover.

Whatever the situation, we give you a clear, firm quote from the outset. Together we establish what can be recovered through insurance and what remains payable, with no costs appearing along the way.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions about repatriation costs

  • How much does repatriation to Romania cost?

Repatriation from European countries typically costs between 2,000 and 5,500 €, with a timeline of 3–7 days. From the USA or Canada, costs start at around $4,900, with air transport and 7–14 days.

  • What determines the cost of repatriation?

Distance, the mode of transport (road or air), the mandatory zinc-lined coffin, consular formalities and preparation of the deceased. Road repatriations within the EU are the most affordable.

  • Is air repatriation more expensive?

As a rule, yes. Air transport costs more than road transport, but is faster and necessary for long distances — such as Spain, the USA or Canada.

  • Is the zinc-lined coffin included in the cost?

Yes. The total repatriation cost includes the hermetically sealed zinc-lined coffin, which is mandatory for international transport. See the page on the zinc-lined coffin.

  • Who pays for repatriation?

Usually the family. In some cases, travel or work insurance from abroad may cover part of the cost. Check the deceased's policy beforehand.

  • How long does a repatriation take?

From Europe, 3–7 days, depending on the country and the speed of local authorities. From outside Europe, 7–14 days, as intercontinental air transport is required.

  • What documents are needed for repatriation?

A local death certificate, a mortuary passport and a consular authorisation. We obtain them through the authorities and the consulate. See the repatriation guide.

  • Does the family need to travel abroad?

No. We coordinate every step from Romania — the paperwork, the coffin, sealing and transport. The family does not travel or negotiate with foreign institutions.

  • Are prices in euros or Romanian lei?

Repatriation costs are usually quoted in euros (or dollars for the Americas), since most of the expenditure occurs in the country of origin. We give you a clear quote in advance.

  • Is there insurance that covers repatriation?

Sometimes. A work insurance policy, travel insurance, or a dedicated repatriation policy from the country where the deceased lived may cover part or all of the cost. Check the documents before paying.

  • Can ashes be repatriated, not just the body?

Yes. If a cremation has already taken place abroad, an urn with ashes is simpler and less expensive to transport than a body, accompanied by the certificate and supporting documents.

  • Who handles the paperwork abroad?

We do, through the local authorities and the Romanian consulate. We obtain the local death certificate, the mortuary passport and the consular authorisation, with no travel required from the family.

  • How much does repatriation of a child cost?

Generally similar to that of an adult, with a smaller coffin. We give you a clear, tailored quote with no hidden differences.

  • Can repatriation be arranged to any city in Romania?

Yes. We bring the deceased to the cemetery or locality chosen by the family, anywhere in the country. Domestic transport, from the point of arrival, is included in the coordination.

  • What happens to the deceased's personal belongings?

Personal effects can be returned to the family, subject to the rules of the country of origin. We include this in our coordination and advise you on what can be brought back alongside the repatriation.
