The cost of cremation brings together several elements: the fee paid to the crematorium, preparation of the deceased, a compatible lightweight wooden coffin, the urn, and transport. A complete package combines all of these at a lower price than a burial with a new plot.

In Bucharest, a complete cremation generally costs between 4,000 and 6,000 lei. That covers the crematorium fee, a compatible coffin, preparation, paperwork, transport, and the urn. For families in Bucharest and Ilfov County, cremation takes place at the Vitan-Bârzești Crematorium in Sector 4. It is the only working crematorium in Bucharest. It is run by a City Hall body, the Bucharest Public Domain Administration (ADPMB), which took over from the former ACCU.
The crematorium fee is the same whichever funeral home books the slot. Price differences between funeral homes come from the coffin, transport, preparation, and what the package does or does not include. Always ask for a written list of what is included.

Romania has a small number of licensed crematoria: in Bucharest (Vitan-Bârzești), in Cluj County (Pro Ignis), and in Oradea (Phoenix). For many families, transport to the crematorium is therefore part of the cost.

The crematorium fee is the first variable, as it differs among the few crematoria in the country. The distance to the crematorium also affects transport costs, especially for families from other cities.
The type of ceremony matters. A simple cremation without an extended wake costs less. A service with a chapel, flowers, and a full ceremony pushes the cost toward the upper limit.
The chosen urn influences the final price. The classic model is included in the package; a premium urn in marble or bronze is added separately. See urn prices.
The crematorium fee is what the crematorium charges for the cremation itself. The table above gives the typical range. The fee does not cover the coffin, transport, preparation, or paperwork. Those are the funeral home's services and are paid for separately from the fee.
At Vitan-Bârzești, the fees are set by the city body that runs the crematorium. After the cremation, the ashes are placed in the crematorium's standard urn or in an urn the family brings. If you would like a particular model, we choose it together before the booking.
In our package, the crematorium fee is included. We pay it when we book, on the family's behalf, and the receipt is issued by the crematorium. You do not pay the fee twice.
If the person who died was insured or receiving a Romanian state pension, the state pays a funeral benefit through the pension office. If the person who died lived in Bucharest, the claim goes to the Bucharest Pension Office (Casa de Pensii a Municipiului București). The full benefit covers our cremation package.
Romanians often call this “paying with the pension slip” (talonul de pensie). The claim needs the application form, the death certificate, and the ID of the person claiming. The pension slip is not always required, but it helps. You sign an assignment with us, the benefit comes straight to us, and you do not pay anything up front. If the person who died had no pension or insurance of their own but was a family member of someone insured or retired (a spouse, child, or parent, for example), the benefit is half the full amount. In that case a balance may remain. We tell you the figure in writing before you sign.

When someone dies at home, a doctor confirms the death and issues the medical certificate of death. Then you call us, at any hour. We come to the home, take your loved one into our care, and bring them for preparation. See also our package for a death at home.
With the medical certificate and the deceased's documents, we obtain the death certificate and the cremation permit from the civil registry office (Starea Civilă). We also handle preparation and the compatible coffin.
To book a slot, Vitan-Bârzești Crematorium asks for a file: the death certificate (original and a copy), the original embalming certificate, the original burial or cremation permit, a copy of the medical certificate of death, and civil-status documents showing the family relationship to the deceased. For a child, the parents' written consent is required. This is the list published by the crematorium's administration (ADPMB). We prepare the file for you.
