GUIDE · CREMATION TIMELINES

How long does cremation take in Romania?

The cremation process itself takes between one and a half and three hours, depending on the cremation chamber and the body. But from the day of death to receiving the urn, the wait is usually several days — time needed for the paperwork and for scheduling at a crematorium. Romania has very few licensed crematoriums, so a waiting list is common. Below are the real timelines, stage by stage.

How long the cremation process takes

The cremation itself takes between one and a half and three hours. The body, placed in a combustible-material casket, is placed in the cremation chamber at very high temperature.

After cremation, the remains cool and are processed, then placed in the urn. The full technical process — including cooling and urn preparation — is usually completed the same day.

From death to receiving the urn

The technical process is short, but the total journey from death to receiving the urn is longer. The time for paperwork and, above all, scheduling at a crematorium adds to the wait.

The table below shows the approximate timeline. Scheduling is the most variable factor, because Romania has only three licensed human crematoriums.

Why it can take longer

The most common cause of delay is scheduling. Romania's three crematoriums serve the entire country, and during busy periods the waiting list can run to several days or even weeks.

Incomplete paperwork, an ordered autopsy, or the distance to the nearest crematorium can also add time. We handle the paperwork and the scheduling so the wait is as short as possible.

The ceremony before cremation

Many families choose a farewell ceremony before the cremation — at the crematorium chapel or at a church. This can be a religious service or a civil ceremony, according to the family's wishes.

The ceremony is scheduled on the same day as the cremation. We coordinate with the officiant and the crematorium so that everything runs smoothly.

What the family receives and when

After cremation, the family receives the urn with the ashes — on the same day or within a few days, depending on the crematorium. The urn can be kept at home, buried in a cemetery plot, or placed in a columbarium niche.

Memorial traditions are the same as for burial. The intervals from 3 days to 7 years are observed identically — see the memorial calendar.

Cremation compared to burial

For a traditional burial, the time from death to burial is typically 2–3 days. For cremation, the technical process is brief, but scheduling can push the total timeline out further.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

What families ask most often

  • How long does the cremation process take?

Between one and a half and three hours, depending on the cremation chamber and the body. After cremation, the remains cool and are processed, then placed in the urn — usually on the same day.

  • How long from the death until I receive the urn?

Usually several days. The technical process is short, but time is added for the paperwork and for crematorium scheduling, which can range from one day to two weeks.

  • Why does crematorium scheduling take so long?

Romania has only three licensed human crematoriums, which serve the entire country. During busy periods there can be a waiting list of several days to a couple of weeks.

  • Can I receive the urn the same day?

Sometimes, yes — on the same day as the cremation. Other times it takes a few days, depending on the crematorium's process. We'll tell you in advance when the urn will be ready.

  • Can there be a ceremony before cremation?

Yes. Many families choose a religious service or a civil ceremony at the crematorium chapel or at a church on the same day. We coordinate with the officiant and the crematorium.

  • What happens to the urn afterwards?

The family decides: keep it at home, bury it in a cemetery plot, or place it in a columbarium niche. We can help with arranging a niche or a plot if needed.

  • Are memorial services still held after cremation?

Yes. Memorial traditions are identical to those for burial — the intervals from 3 days through to 7 years are observed in exactly the same way. Only the service itself may be shorter.

  • Does cremation take longer than burial?

The process itself is short, but crematorium scheduling can push the total timeline beyond the 2–3 days typical for a burial. It depends largely on the waiting list.
