Why coffin prices vary

Coffin pricing starts with the wood. Lightweight softwoods such as spruce are the most affordable. Hardwoods — oak, mahogany, walnut — cost several times more because the material and craftsmanship are more expensive.

Dimensions, finish, and lining also affect the price. A standard coffin costs less than an oversized model or one with silk lining. The full range by wood type is in the table below.

What share of the funeral cost is the coffin

The coffin typically represents one-fifth to one-third of the total cost of a standard funeral. The rest covers transport, preparation of the deceased, the ceremony, the wreath, and the wake meal.

A more expensive coffin therefore does not dramatically raise the total. For a full cost breakdown, see how much a funeral costs or use the funeral cost calculator.

What determines the price

Wood type is the main factor. Spruce and poplar are affordable; oak and mahogany are premium. The price difference between them can be five to six times.

Finish and lining add to the price. A gloss finish, fine fabric or silk lining, a carved cross, and an engraved nameplate all increase the cost. Special dimensions, as in XXL models, require more material.

To choose the right wood for your budget, read the coffin selection guide.

How to choose a coffin by budget

For a limited budget, spruce and poplar provide a dignified ceremony. They are included in the essential package and accepted for cremation.

For a mid-range budget, beech offers a fine grain at a balanced price. For a more distinguished ceremony, oak and mahogany deliver a premium appearance. If cremation is planned, choose a lightweight wood — hardwoods are rarely accepted.

Whatever your budget, we will give you the exact price of the chosen model before any commitment, with no hidden costs.

Stock or made-to-order

Standard models — spruce, poplar, beech — are held in stock and can be delivered within hours, which matters in urgent situations. Their price is the one in the table, with no urgency surcharge.

Special models with custom finishes or dimensions require a few days and cost more. A hand-carved coffin or one with silk lining falls into this category.

In an emergency, we recommend a stock model: dignified and immediately available. Call at any hour and we will tell you what we have and how quickly it can arrive.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions about prices

The cheapest adult coffin starts at 800 lei and is made of spruce. Child models can start from 600 lei. Both include lining and handles.

  • How much does an oak or mahogany coffin cost?

An oak coffin costs between 2,500 and 4,500 lei, while a mahogany or walnut coffin costs between 4,000 and 6,500 lei. These are the premium hardwoods.

  • What share of the total funeral cost is the coffin?

Usually between one-fifth and one-third. The rest of the cost covers transport, preparation, the ceremony, the wreath, and the wake meal. A more expensive coffin does not dramatically raise the total.

  • Does the price include lining and handles?

Yes. The approximate price includes textile lining, handles, and a nameplate. Special customisations such as silk lining are priced separately.

  • Is the coffin included in the funeral package?

Yes. A basic spruce coffin is included in the essential package. For premium woods, the price difference is added to the package.

  • Why do prices vary so much?

The difference comes from the wood type. Lightweight softwoods are inexpensive; dense hardwoods and exotic species cost much more because the material and craftsmanship are expensive.

  • How much does a repatriation coffin cost?

The sealed zinc coffin required for international transport costs between 1,800 and 3,000 lei. It is placed inside a wooden coffin. See the page on zinc coffins.

  • Does the funeral benefit cover the coffin?

Yes. The funeral benefit can cover a large part of the total cost, including the coffin. We help you with the paperwork, without you having to travel anywhere.

  • Can I see the coffin model before ordering?

Yes. We will show you the catalogue of models and finishes, by phone or in person. We show you exactly what you will receive, with no pressure to decide on the spot.

  • Is there an emergency surcharge for the coffin?

No. The price is the same day or night, on weekends and on public holidays. For urgent orders we deliver a stock model within hours at the price shown in the table.

  • How is the coffin paid for?

The coffin is included in the total funeral invoice. For cases covered by the funeral benefit, the amount can be settled by assignment, so the family pays little or nothing upfront.

  • Do coffin prices include VAT?

The company is not a VAT payer, so the prices in the table are final — no VAT is added to the invoice. What you see is what you pay.

  • Does an oversized coffin cost more?

Yes. An XXL model with increased width and structure requires more material and labour, so it costs more than a standard coffin in the same wood. We confirm the price after checking the dimensions.
