Bucharest cemeteries: list and how to obtain a plot

Bucharest has dozens of cemeteries: 15 municipal ones run by the city's Administration of Cemeteries and Human Crematoria (ACCU), alongside confessional and private cemeteries. A burial plot is obtained through a concession, under each administration's regulations. We help you find a suitable plot in Bucharest and handle the formalities — including when the family is arranging everything from abroad.

Who runs Bucharest's cemeteries?

Most large cemeteries in the capital are municipal: 15 cemeteries covering roughly 150 hectares, run by the Administration of Cemeteries and Human Crematoria (ACCU), an institution under the General Council of the Municipality of Bucharest. ACCU also administers the heroes' cemeteries and the city's human crematoria.

Alongside them operate confessional cemeteries — belonging to churches and other denominations — and private ones. Each administration has its own regulations, fees, and procedures, within the framework set by Law 102/2014.

How do you obtain a burial plot in Bucharest?

A burial plot is obtained through a concession from the administration of the chosen cemetery — ACCU for municipal ones, the parish or the private operator for the others. The steps are the standard ones: application, documents, concession contract.

The full procedure, documents, and concession types are explained on the page about obtaining a burial plot. In Bucharest, the real difference between cemeteries is availability, not procedure.

Where are plots still available?

In the central, historic cemeteries, new plots are rare. Families usually use an existing family plot or take over a plot whose concession has expired.

Cemeteries on the edge of the city have better availability. We help you find a suitable plot by area, budget, and real availability — which matters especially if you are arranging the funeral from abroad and cannot visit in person.

What to check before choosing in Bucharest

When looking for a burial plot in Bucharest, a few things matter more than others:

  • Real plot availability in the cemetery you want
  • Concession duration and cost at that administration
  • Distance from the family's home — visits matter over the years
  • The administration's rules for monuments and plot works
  • Whether a family vault or crypt may be built

Cremation and columbarium in Bucharest

For families who choose cremation, Bucharest has the Vitan-Bârzești Crematorium, in Sector 4. The urn can then be placed in a columbarium niche or in an existing family plot.

We explain the options — a burial plot or an urn niche — and help you decide according to the family's wishes.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Answers to frequent questions

  • How many municipal cemeteries does Bucharest have?

15 municipal cemeteries covering roughly 150 hectares, run by ACCU — the Administration of Cemeteries and Human Crematoria. There are also heroes', confessional, and private cemeteries.

  • What is ACCU?

The Administration of Cemeteries and Human Crematoria — the institution under the General Council of the Municipality of Bucharest that runs the capital's municipal cemeteries and human crematoria.

  • How do I obtain a burial plot in Bucharest?

Through a concession from the chosen cemetery's administration: ACCU for municipal cemeteries, the parish for confessional ones, the operator for private ones. You file an application with documents, then sign the concession contract.

  • Are plots still available in central Bucharest cemeteries?

Rarely. In the historic cemeteries, new plots are almost gone; families usually use an existing family plot or take over an expired concession. Availability is better towards the edge of the city.

  • How much does a burial plot cost in Bucharest?

It depends on the cemetery, the area, and the concession duration — as a guide, a new plot costs between 3,000 and 30,000 lei, plus a maintenance fee. We give you concrete figures for the cemetery you choose.

  • Can I arrange a burial plot in Bucharest from abroad?

Yes. We check availability, handle the concession paperwork with the administration, and coordinate it with repatriation and the funeral itself, so the family does not need to travel twice.

  • Where do cremations take place in Bucharest?

At the Vitan-Bârzești Crematorium, in Sector 4. The urn is then placed in a columbarium niche or in an existing family plot.

  • Can I be buried in Bucharest if I live elsewhere?

Usually yes, in cemeteries whose rules allow concessions for non-residents — especially private ones. We check the regulations of the cemetery you want before any commitment.

  • Can I take over a relative's burial plot in Bucharest?

Yes, by transferring the concession to the heirs, with the administration's approval. The required documents are set by the cemetery administration — we handle the file on the family's behalf.

  • Will you help me find a burial plot in Bucharest?

Yes. Tell us the area, budget, and preferences, and we check real availability, explain the fees, and handle the concession, together with the rest of the arrangements.
