Exhumation prices

Exhumation generally costs between 1,500 and 4,000 lei, depending on the purpose and any transport involved. By law, exhumation may be carried out after 7 years from the date of burial; earlier than that, only with a permit from the Public Health Authority (DSP) or by court order.

What exhumation is

Exhumation means the removal of remains from a grave. It is usually carried out for reburial in a different plot, for placement in a family vault, or for transfer to another locality.

The work requires a permit and must comply with strict legal timeframes for public health reasons. We handle the paperwork, the labour, and any transport, so the family does not have to go through the process alone.

When exhumation is permitted

The general rule is that exhumation may take place after 7 years from the date of burial. After this period, the remains may be exhumed at any time of year, without a permit from the Public Health Authority (DSP).

Before 7 years, exhumation is permitted only in two situations: after at least one year from burial, between 1 November and 31 March, with a DSP permit, for reburial in a different plot; or at any time, on the basis of a prosecutor's or court order. The legal basis is Government Decision 741/2016.

The legal procedure, step by step

First, the timeframe is checked: if 7 years have passed since burial, no DSP permit is needed. If less time has passed, we obtain the health authority permit under the conditions permitted by law.

Next comes the application to the cemetery administration and scheduling of the work. The exhumation itself is carried out by authorised personnel in compliance with the health standards in Government Decision 741/2016.

The remains are placed in an ossuary or, for transfer to another locality, in a sealed zinc coffin. Reburial at the new site or transport then follows.

What determines the cost

The purpose of the exhumation matters most. A simple reburial in the same cemetery costs less than a transfer to another locality, which adds transport and a zinc coffin.

The age of the grave and its condition affect the labour. A grave with a monument or cladding requires additional dismantling and reassembly work.

For transfer to another city, the same transport rules apply as for domestic repatriation. For a new monument, see monument prices.

Transfer to another cemetery or locality

Moving remains to a different cemetery, city, or family vault is the most common reason for exhumation. For this, within 7 years, the law requires a DSP permit and the period between 1 November and 31 March.

The remains are transported in a sealed zinc coffin, and reburial takes place at the destination with the receiving cemetery's approval. We coordinate the entire journey, including funeral transport.

For a new burial plot or a vault, those costs are added separately. We provide a clear quote before we begin.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions about prices

  • How much does an exhumation cost?

An exhumation with reburial generally costs between 1,500 and 4,000 lei in 2026. The cost includes labour, the remains container, and, where applicable, transport. The new plot and monument are added separately.

  • How many years must pass before exhumation is allowed?

The general rule is 7 years from the date of burial. After this period, the remains may be exhumed at any time of year, without a permit from the Public Health Authority.

  • Can exhumation be carried out before 7 years?

Yes, in two situations: after at least one year, between 1 November and 31 March, with a DSP permit, for reburial in a different plot; or at any time, on the basis of a prosecutor's or court order.

  • What authorisation is required for exhumation?

Within 7 years, a sanitary permit from the Public Health Authority (DSP) is required. After 7 years, this permit is no longer needed. In all cases, approval from the cemetery administration is required.

  • Why is an exhumation carried out?

Most often for reburial in a different plot, for placement in a family vault, or for transfer to another locality. Less commonly, on the basis of a court order.

  • Who carries out the exhumation?

Authorised personnel, in compliance with the health standards of Government Decision 741/2016. The family does not take part in the work itself; we coordinate the entire process.

  • How are the remains transferred to another city?

The remains are placed in a sealed zinc coffin and transported to the new cemetery, with the approval of the receiving administration. We coordinate the paperwork, transport, and reburial.

  • What happens to the monument during exhumation?

A monument or cladding is dismantled before the work and reassembled afterwards, if the remains stay in the same location. For a transfer, a new monument is erected at the new grave.

  • How long does an exhumation take?

The work itself usually takes one day. Including obtaining permits and scheduling, the entire process can take from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the case.

  • Do exhumation prices include VAT?

Our rates are final, with no VAT added, as the company is not a VAT payer. Any cemetery fees are invoiced separately by the administration.

  • Can I exhume to make room for a new burial?

Yes. After 7 years, the remains can be collected into an ossuary to free up the plot. This is common practice for family burial plots, in accordance with the cemetery regulations.

  • Who helps me with the paperwork for exhumation?

We handle the permits, the application to the cemetery, and the scheduling. The family does not travel to any offices. We explain each step and the cost before we begin.
