Pentecostal funeral: service and traditions

A Pentecostal funeral is a service led by a pastor, centred on the Word of God and the hope of resurrection. It includes a sermon, a word of comfort for the family, Christian hymns and prayer. Pentecostals do not use icons and do not hold memorial services at fixed dates; the deceased is remembered through prayer and through the memory of their life of faith. Burial is the tradition, though cremation is increasingly accepted. This guide explains the rite and how we can help.

What a Pentecostal funeral is

A Pentecostal funeral is an evangelical Christian service, led by the church's pastor. The emphasis is on the Word of God, the hope of resurrection and comfort for the family.

The Pentecostal Church is one of the largest neo-Protestant denominations in Romania. The service is warm and alive, with a sermon, hymns and prayer.

The service and the pastor

The service is led by a pastor, at the church, at a chapel or at home. There is no priest and no sacraments as in the Orthodox Church; the pastor preaches, comforts and prays.

The order of service is not fixed and may vary between congregations, but its heart is always the same — the Word, song and prayer.

The sermon and the word of comfort

The pastor delivers a sermon grounded in Scripture, on the hope of resurrection and eternal life. He adds a word of comfort for the family and a tribute to the deceased.

The sermon is not only about the one who has died, but also an encouragement to those still living — toward faith and a good life.

The hymns

Hymns play an important part in a Pentecostal funeral. The congregation sings Christian hymns, old or contemporary, on themes of hope, resurrection and comfort.

The church choir or those present sing together. Many Pentecostal churches also use instruments — piano, guitar, organ — to accompany the hymns at the service. Music brings solace and lifts the mind toward God.

Burial or cremation

The Pentecostal tradition is burial, rooted in faith in the resurrection of the body. Cremation was long avoided, but is increasingly accepted by some families.

The decision rests with the family and their convictions. We offer guidance with respect, without imposing either option. See also the guide on burial or cremation.

Pentecostal Church of Romania

No icons, no memorial services

Pentecostals do not use icons, devotional candles or other objects specific to Orthodox tradition. The service is sober, centred on the Word and on prayer.

No memorial services are held and no ritual commemorations with special food are made. The deceased is remembered through prayer and through the memory of their life of faith.

The Pentecostal vigil

On the evening before the funeral, the family and fellow church members gather for a vigil. It is a time of prayer, song and comfort, not of ritual customs.

Those close to the deceased read from Scripture, sing and pray together, strengthening one another in faith and hope.

Remembering the deceased

After the funeral, the deceased is remembered warmly in the church and in the family. There are no commemorations at fixed dates, but memory and prayer remain alive.

Many choose to honour the memory of the deceased through a good deed, a donation or service in the church, in the spirit of their faith.

Pentecostals in Romania

The Pentecostal Church is officially recognised and has congregations across the country, mainly in Transylvania, Banat and Moldavia. The funeral service follows the same general order throughout.

We will direct you to the right church and pastor for your community and coordinate with them on the day and time of the service.

Scripture passages used for comfort

At a Pentecostal funeral, the pastor often chooses Scripture passages about hope and resurrection:

  • Psalm 23 — The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
  • John 11:25 — I am the resurrection and the life
  • John 14:1–3 — In my Father's house are many rooms
  • 1 Thessalonians 4 — concerning those who have fallen asleep and the hope of resurrection
  • Revelation 21:4 — God will wipe away every tear

What to know if you are attending

If you are going to a Pentecostal funeral and are not from the congregation, a few things will help:

  • Sober, modest clothing
  • There are no icons to kiss or devotional candles to light
  • You may sing and pray along with the congregation
  • Flowers are accepted as a sign of respect
  • A kind word to the family is welcome
